Frequently Asked Questions
What is a pip?
A pip (percentage in point) is the smallest standard price move in a currency pair. For most pairs (EUR/USD, GBP/USD), 1 pip = 0.0001. For JPY pairs (USD/JPY, EUR/JPY), 1 pip = 0.01. For gold (XAU/USD), 1 pip = 0.01.
How is pip value calculated?
Pip Value = (Pip Size × Lot Size × Contract Size) × (Quote Currency / Account Currency). For EUR/USD with 1 standard lot: 0.0001 × 1 × 100,000 = $10 per pip.
Why does pip value matter?
Pip value tells you exactly how much money you gain or lose per pip movement. Without knowing pip value, you cannot accurately calculate position size, set stop losses in dollar terms, or manage risk properly.
Is pip value different for gold?
Yes. Gold (XAU/USD) has a contract size of 100 oz. A $1 move = 100 pips at $0.01 per pip. So 1 standard lot of gold: 1 pip = $0.01 × 100,000 = Wait — gold pip value = $0.01 × 100 oz = $1 per 0.01 move = $100 per $1 move per lot.
What is a pipette?
A pipette (fractional pip) is 1/10th of a pip. Most modern brokers quote 5 decimal places for regular pairs and 3 for JPY pairs. The 5th decimal place is the pipette. 10 pipettes = 1 pip.
