Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Pomodoro Technique?
The Pomodoro Technique is a time management method developed by Francesco Cirillo. Work in focused 25-minute sessions (pomodoros) separated by 5-minute breaks. After 4 pomodoros, take a longer 15–30 minute break. The timer name comes from the tomato-shaped kitchen timer Cirillo used as a student.
Why does the Pomodoro Technique work?
It works because it creates urgency (a deadline every 25 minutes), makes large tasks feel manageable, builds in regular recovery, and trains sustained concentration. The break intervals prevent mental fatigue and maintain productivity over long work sessions.
How do I use this timer effectively?
Before starting: write down the one task you will focus on. Start the timer and work on only that task. When the timer rings, mark a pomodoro complete. After 4 pomodoros, take a 15–30 minute long break. This timer plays an audio alert and updates the page title so you can keep track while in other tabs.
Can I change the 25-minute duration?
Yes — use the 'Customize durations' section to set your own focus, short break, and long break times. Some people prefer 50-minute focus sessions. The standard Pomodoro is 25 minutes, but the right duration is whatever helps you focus best.
Does the timer work when the tab is in the background?
Yes. The timer continues running even when you switch to another tab. The page title updates with the remaining time (e.g. '18:32 — ToolsNova Pomodoro') so you can see it in your browser tab without switching back.
